In April, Gruma president and CEO, Juan González Moreno and the president of the Southern Methodist University of Texas in Dallas (SMU), Gerald Turner, signed an agreement to createThe Mission Foods Texas-MexicoCenter. Its main purpose consists in studying, elevating, and improving Mexico-Texas-United States relations with investigations, annual conferences, and public forums. Gruma-Mission Foods contributed US$4 million to this project.

Seeking to benefit the Mexican and Hispanic populations in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the addition of folic acid to corn flour to reduce the number of fetal spinal malformations, better known as spina bifida. This is the most important accomplishment in the history of Latino nutrition in the United States, and was made possible thanks to joint work carried out since 2012 by Gruma and the following civil associations: Spina Bifida Associations, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Council of la Raza (NCLR), and the March of Dimes, all of which supported all the research necessary to obtain this authorization

During the month of May, the Grupo Industrial MASECA (GIMSA) plant in Sonora celebrated 50 years of operations. After unveiling the commemorative anniversary plate, Juan González Moreno, President and CEO of Gruma, highlighted that thanks to the commitment, dedication and passion of all associates towards the company, MASECA is celebrating half a century of activity in Sonora, feeding a growing number of Sonora natives, and serving its clients more efficiently with wholesome, world-class quality products.

Agromas, Gruma’s new balanced feed plant for animal nutrition was inaugurated in the Apizaco, Tlaxcala industrial corridor.

October. Gruma inaugurated a USD 55 million plant in Malaysia. The new facility has an annual installed capacity to produce 30 thousand tons of tortillas, fried products and flat breads like wraps and pizza crusts. “It is a very powerful symbol of Gruma’s fundamental values and of its commitment towards its clients, consumers, suppliers, shareholders and the community in general,” said Juan González Moreno, Gruma president and CEO, at the inauguration of the new plant in Kuala Lumpur.

November. Gruma celebrated 10 years of operating in China. The company has consolidated its position in this market offering high quality Mission products that can be purchased in thousands of supermarkets and convenience stores all over the country. Gruma exports from its Mission Foods Shanghai plant to nations in the Asia-Pacific and middle-eastern regions, where its products have won over consumers because of their quality and flavor.

December. Gruma held a groundbreaking ceremony in Huejotzingo, Puebla, where it will build its third Mission tortilla and tostada production plant in Mexico. Annual installed capacity will be more than 50 thousand tons of corn and wheat tortillas, baked tostadas, and fried products. This new plant consolidates Mission-Mexico’s position as a leading national company in corn tortilla and tostada distribution to the self-service channel.
