Since its inception, technological research and development has been the main pillar
on which GRUMA has supported its success.
As a result of the emphasis placed on technological development for more than 5
decades, GRUMA currently owns state-of-the-art technology to build corn flour and
tortilla plants.
This technology permits GRUMA to produce different types of flour suitable for every
use. In the last years we developed whiter flours with better yield, which makes
them superior in quality, compared to the competition.
By implementing state-of-the-art technology, GRUMA has developed equipment to make
tortillas, which produce substantially higher volumes and cost savings compared to
traditional machines. GRUMA's tortilla machines produce up to 1,200 corn tortillas
or 400 wheat tortillas per minute, whereas traditional machines in Mexico produce
only 30 to 50 tortillas per minute.
With this advanced production technology, the company has reduced its variable
production costs for corn and wheat tortillas 36% and 25%, respectively. These
machines have been used successfully in GRUMA’s operating facilities in the United
States and Central America.
